A job after returning – and a plan

I lived in Germany for 20 years before coming back to Pakistan. The PGFRC helped me to find work, which is taking me closer to my long-term goal of having my own restaurant.

My name is Rashid, I’m 65 years old and come from Lahore. I moved to Germany 20 years ago to earn a living for my family and worked in catering there. But I lost my job due to the corona pandemic, so I decided to come back to Pakistan.

While I was still in Germany, I learned about the “Returning to New Opportunities” programme. I went to the District Office Tübingen to get some advice.

Jointly adapting the plans

I was referred to an advisor at BBQ Bildung und Berufliche Qualifizierung. I told her that I’d like to open a restaurant in Pakistan. She introduced me to the advisory team at the Pakistani-German Facilitation and Reintegration Centre (PGFRC). I was relieved to learn that there are people in my home country who will help me after going back home. We discussed my restaurant idea via Skype and then I started preparing for my return.

I arrived back in Pakistan at the end of 2020 and went to the PGFRC to meet the team in person. My advisor had thought some more about my restaurant idea. He advised me to start off by looking for a job in the catering industry. This work experience would help me understand the local structures, and then I’d be in a better position to start my own business. I liked this idea.

Help preparing a CV

The PGFRC helped me to write my CV and register on various online job portals. I applied to some companies, and I was overjoyed when I made it onto the shortlist for an interview. It actually worked out, and I was hired as an event manager. That was an unbelievable experience for me – I was elated.

I went straight to the PGFRC to share my good news. After starting the new job I soon discovered that I had a lot of free time in the evenings, so I decided to make best use of it. I wanted to work as a courier, but I needed a motorbike for that. When I told the PGFRC about it the team referred me to one of their partners, the Mojaz Foundation, who would be able to help me.

The foundation enabled me to take part in a four-day training course on business development. It taught me how to prepare an investment plan, and I learned a lot about different strategies for developing a business. It helped me realise that a motorbike can be an important tool for my business, because it gives me greater mobility. I can use it to drive to where I work. It also gives me the opportunity to take on additional delivery tasks. The team at the Mojaz Foundation recognised my need and the benefit to my business. The people in charge therefore agreed to help me to buy the motorbike.

I’m now very happy and very satisfied. I have two jobs and this is taking me closer to my long-term goal of owning my own restaurant.
