Getting started in Abuja
My name is Kingsley and I come from Nigeria. I travelled to Germany seeking new career opportunities in 2012. I stayed for six years, but had no success. A training course on how to start your own company finally gave me the courage to try once more in my home country. Now I own a shoe shop in Abuja and business is good. I'd like to tell you how I accomplished it:
I always dreamed of selling shoes. I did open a shoe shop, but the income wasn't sufficient. So I emigrated to Germany in 2012. I hoped to improve my economic situation in Germany, but my expectations were not fulfilled. So after six years I decided to try once again in my home country.
I had already found initial support in Germany with the "Social Impact" organisation. Various training sessions taught me how to start and manage a business. I flew back to Abuja in July 2018. My country had changed a lot in the meantime. Even the job market had become very different. After my return, I therefore went straight to the "German-Nigerian Advice Centre for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration" and asked for advice. There I mentioned my idea of opening a shoe shop. Ideally I wanted to sell children's shoes.
The centre invited me to attend free training for entrepreneurs. I attended the "Entrepreneurial Cycle Training" course for three months. I learned how to properly establish, manage and market a business in Nigeria. So then I registered my business with the trade association. Now I successfully run my own shoe shop in Kuje, Abuja.
My dream is that my business will grow so that I can give jobs to other people.
