Self-employed with my own business concept

My name is Mujibullah and I’m 28 years old. I lived in Germany for a while. But my family had stayed in Afghanistan, which is why I came back to my home country. I decided to establish my own business here building and selling small decorative landscapes.

After school, I spent two semesters studying at university. But then I dropped out and worked for a while as a car mechanic in a workshop. I set off alone to Germany in 2015 hoping to find a better future there, but I was only able to get casual jobs. In 2017, I decided to return to my family in Afghanistan.

Intensive training on starting a business

I wanted to earn money back in Afghanistan and to develop something of my own rather than rely on poorly paid jobs. I didn’t know how to go about becoming self-employed, but the International Organization for Migration (IOM) helped me with that. It referred me to the AGHAEZ organisation, which works on behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH running 2-week intensive training courses on how to start a business.

I learned a lot in these two weeks. We worked together on my business concept for the miniature landscapes. I also learned the basics about how to start and manage a business. I learned how to prepare a business and budget plan, for example. After that I built a few samples of my product, using materials such as sand in different colours, stones, plants, animal figures, small model houses and many more.

I use them to create a landscape in a vase or another container. These objects embellish rooms and shop windows. I now have the knowledge that I need to sell my landscapes on the market.

The corona pandemic and the lockdown made it difficult for me to sell my products. The “Returning to New Opportunities” programme helped me with funding to get through this difficult time. Now I can be optimistic about the future again.
