Digital and Social Media Marketing

This self-paced course developed by the Ghanaian-European Centre for Jobs, Migration and Development (GEC) will help you to market your business on social channels and show you how to effectively reach your audience. You will get an introduction into digital marketing and social media and learn how to use social media. You will also learn about different social media platforms and how your business can be found on Google. It will take you about 90 minutes to complete this course and you will receive a certificate a digital certificate.

Who is this course for?

The course is intended for SME professionals in management positions, and anyone interested in the topic. It has a focus on the Ghanaian market but is still relevant for related markets.

What will you learn?

  • You learn the main concepts of digital and social media marketing
  • You will learn how to explain the value of online media in promoting a business
  • You will learn how to generate leads through online resources appropriate to the business

Then technical vocational education and training (TVET) can help you.

You can even apply if you've already taken a training course at a vocational training centre.

A scholarship is available to assist you to take part in TVET in The Gambia. The scholarship also enables you to buy tools to help with starting your own business.

These scholarships are offered by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Gambian-German Advisory Centre for Jobs, Training and Reintegration (GGAC).

Chances for young people in Gambia

The Make it in the Gambia – Tekki Fii programme improves the economic situation and prospects for young people and young adults in Gambia, even migrants and returnees. 

The Youth Service Directory (YSD) web portal gives you an overview of many different offerings. The providers are partners of Tekki Fii and other organisations. 

The offers include for example:

  • Training courses in the areas of agriculture, energy and services. These training courses are held in different regions of Gambia.
  • Training courses on business start-ups
  • You can receive a grant with equipment once you have completed your training course.
  • You can apply for a microcredit or a bigger loan once you have successfully set up your business. You will be supported in this. 

The Tekki Fii programme and the YSD website are funded by the EU.

Vocational qualifications

During the training at the Gambia Technical Training Institute in Mansa Konko you will learn 

  • how to manufacture and repair agricultural equipment and metal structures

or:

  • how to manufacture, install and repair small solar systems.   

The training will start with a 4-weeks-preliminary course, where you will acquire basic knowledge for the trainings. 
The duration of the certificate trainings is 1 year. During this time, you will also do a 3-week internship. At the end you will receive a certificate.

Agricultural training courses

The Gambia Songhai Initiative offers a range of training courses to enable you to improve your agricultural skills. Training covers the following areas:

  • soil preparation
  • animal products
  • plant products
  • post-harvest treatment process
  • food processing
  • equipment maintenance.

Trainees may be offered a job working for the Initiative. If you complete your training successfully, you may be able to continue working there.

The National Centre for Arts and Culture The Gambia (NCAC) promotes art and cultural activities in the country. It offers training for artists in how to effectively market their work. NCAC also runs a special training course for tour guides to equip them to explain the Gambia’s history and culture.

All things farming-related

Gambia Horticulture Enterprises (GHE) offers a range of training in different aspects of agriculture and horticulture. These include:

  • pest control
  • mechanical engineering in agriculture.

In our mechanical engineering training, you will learn how farming machinery works and how to repair it.

GHE also has its own farm. GHE sells:

  • its own agricultural products
  • agricultural machinery.

GHE has apprentices working on its farm. Sometimes, there are opportunities for participants in the training courses to be given an apprenticeship place at GHE.

If you complete your apprenticeship successfully, you may be offered a job with GHE. This could be on the farm, in the shop or as a travelling salesperson.

At the SASS Academy, you can learn all about hairdressing, cosmetics and make-up. The intensive, 12-month training programme takes place in small groups.

Practical training: farm work and fish farming

The Njawara Agricultural Training Centre (NATC) has been helping people in the agricultural sector since 1997. It offers a range of highly practical training courses. You can take what you have learned and put it straight into practice in the field, for example. You will receive a certificate if you successfully complete your course. Following your training, you can get financial support or equipment for your farm from NARI.

NARI also offers courses in fish farming.

The Gambia National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) is a research body that works internationally with other institutes in Nigeria, Benin and Niger.
NARI has several centres:

  • Brikama
  • Sapu
  • Yundum
  • other small facilities throughout the Gambia.

NARI researches agricultural topics. These include:

  • pest control
  • soil analysis
  • food quality.

Ensuring good soil quality and reducing the number of pests makes it easier to grow crops and improves the quality of the foodstuffs harvested.

The Gambia Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) offers a range of training courses. Here, you can learn how to make the most effective use of digital media and communication in your job or company.

The organisation Future in Salikenni offers a range of training courses. You can only attend the courses if you live in Salikenni. The computer courses are run at a computer centre in Salikenni with internet access. There is also a garden project in which you can learn a lot about field cultivation and crops.

A range of training courses

The President’s International Award - The Gambia (PIA) was created by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. PIA works with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the UK.

PIA offers technical and behavioural training for men and women. There are courses in the following fields, for example:

  • electrical installation and maintenance
  • fashion design
  • hairdressing
  • tailoring and dressmaking
  • joinery
  • plumbing.

PIA has training facilities in Kerewan in the North Bank Region. These facilities often already have the necessary equipment and resources. This means that if you train as a tailor or dressmaker, for example, you will be able to use the sewing machines on site.
