Digital and Social Media Marketing

This self-paced course developed by the Ghanaian-European Centre for Jobs, Migration and Development (GEC) will help you to market your business on social channels and show you how to effectively reach your audience. You will get an introduction into digital marketing and social media and learn how to use social media. You will also learn about different social media platforms and how your business can be found on Google. It will take you about 90 minutes to complete this course and you will receive a certificate a digital certificate.

Who is this course for?

The course is intended for SME professionals in management positions, and anyone interested in the topic. It has a focus on the Ghanaian market but is still relevant for related markets.

Then technical vocational education and training (TVET) can help you.

You can even apply if you've already taken a training course at a vocational training centre.

A scholarship is available to assist you to take part in TVET in The Gambia. The scholarship also enables you to buy tools to help with starting your own business.

These scholarships are offered by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Gambian-German Advisory Centre for Jobs, Training and Reintegration (GGAC).

The Institut für Policy Management (SMD) cooperates with the Gambian-German Advisory Centre for Jobs, Training and Reintegration (GGAC) to offer courses.

The courses last 2 days and aim to make it easier to enter the job market.

Are you interested in agricultural training or vocational training in agriculture? 

Then the “The Gambia Pilot Program” (GPP) can help you to find a suitable vocational training course. 

This project focuses on the following areas:
-    Horticulture 
-    Poultry farming
-    Fish farming 

The GPP programme enables young people, women and returnees to enjoy a better future by improving their income and working conditions.

Chances for young people in Gambia

The Make it in the Gambia – Tekki Fii programme improves the economic situation and prospects for young people and young adults in Gambia, even migrants and returnees. 

The Youth Service Directory (YSD) web portal gives you an overview of many different offerings. The providers are partners of Tekki Fii and other organisations. 

The offers include for example:

• Training courses in the areas of agriculture, energy and services. These training courses are held in different regions of Gambia.
• Training courses on business start-ups
• You can receive a grant with equipment once you have completed your training course.
• You can apply for a microcredit or a bigger loan once you have successfully set up your business. You will be supported in this. 

The Tekki Fii programme and the YSD website are funded by the EU.

Vocational qualifications

During the training at the Gambia Technical Training Institute in Mansa Konko you will learn 

• how to manufacture and repair agricultural equipment and metal structures

or:

• how to manufacture, install and repair small solar systems.   

The training will start with a 4-weeks-preliminary course, where you will acquire basic knowledge for the trainings. 
The duration of the certificate trainings is 1 year. During this time, you will also do a 3-week internship. At the end you will receive a certificate.

Agricultural training courses

The Gambia Songhai Initiative offers a range of training courses to enable you to improve your agricultural skills. Training covers the following areas:

• soil preparation
• animal products
• plant products
• post-harvest treatment process
• food processing
• equipment maintenance.

Trainees may be offered a job working for the Initiative. If you complete your training successfully, you may be able to continue working there.

For artists and tour guides

The National Centre for Arts and Culture The Gambia (NCAC) promotes art and cultural activities in the country. It offers training for artists in how to effectively market their work. NCAC also runs a special training course for tour guides to equip them to explain the Gambia’s history and culture.

Events, food and drink

The Gaye Njorro School of Hairdressing & Beauty Cosmetology is a training centre that has courses for different jobs, including catering.

It also has courses that will help you start your own business.

Working in tourism

The Institute of Travel and Tourism of The Gambia (ITTOG) works in partnership with Central College Nottingham in the UK. ITTOG offers a wide range of courses, enabling you to train for different jobs such as tour guide or flight attendant.

There are also courses in:

• management

Additionally, you can train as an instructor in the tourism sector.

The Gaye Njorro School of Hairdressing & Beauty Cosmetology is a training centre offering courses for different kinds of work in the beauty, wellness and fashion sectors. You can do a training in:

• fashion design.

There are also courses to help you start your own business.

Golden Hands Foundation Academy offers training in the following areas:

• hairdressing

All things farming-related

Gambia Horticulture Enterprises (GHE) offers a range of training in different aspects of agriculture and horticulture. These include:

• pest control
• mechanical engineering in agriculture.

In our mechanical engineering training, you will learn how farming machinery works and how to repair it.

GHE also has its own farm. GHE sells:

• its own agricultural products
• agricultural machinery.

GHE has apprentices working on its farm. Sometimes, there are opportunities for participants in the training courses to be given an apprenticeship place at GHE.

If you complete your apprenticeship successfully, you may be offered a job with GHE. This could be on the farm, in the shop or as a travelling salesperson.

Beauty academy in the Gambia

At the SASS Academy, you can learn all about hairdressing, cosmetics and make-up. The intensive, 12-month training programme takes place in small groups.
If you complete the training successfully, you will receive a nationally accredited diploma.

Practical training: farm work and fish farming

The Njawara Agricultural Training Centre (NATC) has been helping people in the agricultural sector since 1997. It offers a range of highly practical training courses. You can take what you have learned and put it straight into practice in the field, for example. You will receive a certificate if you successfully complete your course. Following your training, you can get financial support or equipment for your farm from NARI.

NARI also offers courses in fish farming.

Training for farmers

The Gambia National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) is a research body that works internationally with other institutes in Nigeria, Benin and Niger.
NARI has several centres:

• Brikama
• Sapu
• Yundum
• other small facilities throughout the Gambia.

NARI researches agricultural topics. These include:

• pest control
• soil analysis
• food quality.

Ensuring good soil quality and reducing the number of pests makes it easier to grow crops and improves the quality of the foodstuffs harvested.

You can learn a lot of new things about agriculture at the NARI centres and also learn how to manage your farm more effectively.

Using digital media properly

The Gambia Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) offers a range of training courses. Here, you can learn how to make the most effective use of digital media and communication in your job or company.

The training is, of course, open to both men and women. Anyone taking part in YMCA training can rent accommodation on the campus. which you would have to pay for.

Up to speed with telecommunications

The Gambia Telecommunications and Multimedia Institute (GTMI) has a range of training courses. For example, you can learn:

• how to repair mobile phones and laptops,
• how to install satellite dishes,
• how to use Microsoft and CISCO.

You will have to pay a fee for the training. People aged between 15 and 35 can apply to the Institute for financial support.

Training courses for technical jobs

Real Tech Gambia Ltd. offers technical and IT courses. For example in:

• repairing devices (mobile phones, laptops, tablets, TVs and printers)
• web design
• web content management.

There are also special courses for returnees.

IT, management and more

QuantumNet Institute of Technology (QIT) offers computer courses. QIT has courses for beginners and for more advanced users.

QIT also offers courses in different areas of management:

• HR management
• company management
• finance management.

You will receive a certificate if you successfully complete your course.
You will have to pay a fee for the courses.

Using computers properly

The Nifty School of Computer Technology brings your computer skills up to speed. It does not matter how much you already know. There is a range of courses on topics such as:

• an introduction to Microsoft Office
• web design.

You will receive a certificate if you successfully complete your course.
Participants can work on the computers at the school. You will have to pay a fee for the courses.

Technical training

Sterling Consortium offers a range of training courses. For example in:

• solar power installation
• TV
• alarm systems
• graphic design

Returnees can also complete training.

Training in IT and engineering

The Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) offers a range of training courses. For example in:

• IT
• business
• car mechanics.

The necessary equipment and machinery are usually available on site for you to use during your training.

Returnees can also apply for a training course.

You will have to pay a fee for the courses. However, you may be able to get financial support from the GTTI.

Quality management in the Gambia

The Gambia Standards Bureau (TGSB) offers short training courses which look at the quality of your products and services. You will learn how to meet the standards, which is important if you want to be able to sell your products on the national and international markets.

The course list is available on the website. You will have to apply for the courses. You can apply on the website. A number of courses are funded by the European Union. You will have to pay a fee for the courses. Some courses are free of charge for young people.

Training in Salikenni, the Gambia

The organisation Future in Salikenni offers a range of training courses. You can only attend the courses if you live in Salikenni. The computer courses are run at a computer centre in Salikenni with internet access. There is also a garden project in which you can learn a lot about field cultivation and crops.

Your children can go to school in Salikenni free of charge if you live and work in the village. For more information, please call the phone number or send an email.

A range of training courses

The President’s International Award - The Gambia (PIA) was created by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. PIA works with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the UK.

PIA offers technical and behavioural training for men and women. There are courses in the following fields, for example:

• electrical installation and maintenance
• fashion design
• hairdressing
• tailoring and dressmaking
• joinery
• plumbing.

PIA has training facilities in Kerewan in the North Bank Region. These facilities often already have the necessary equipment and resources. This means that if you train as a tailor or dressmaker, for example, you will be able to use the sewing machines on site.
Returnees can also complete training here.

Training for young people

The training provided by the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS) is wide-ranging. Men and women can train for a number of different jobs:

• car mechanics
• painting and decorating
• plumbing
• tailoring and dressmaking
• other occupations.

To apply, you need to have a school-leaving qualification. You will have to pay a fee for the training.
