Choosing the Right Path: Steven’s Road to Germany

Choosing the Right Path: Steven’s Road to Germany

Steven dreams of working in the renewable energy sector abroad. The Iraqi-German Center for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration (GMAC) helped him identify the best pathways for migrating to Germany and prepare for the move.

I am Steven, a 32-year-old Solar Energy Consultant from Mosul in Iraq. After completing my bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, I moved to Hungary with my wife to pursue a master's degree in physics. Today, we are back in Iraq, preparing to move to Germany. Our previous experience gives us confidence for our next chapter.

Finding reliable information

After returning to Iraq, I began exploring opportunities to work in Germany. Although information was easy to find online, knowing what to trust was much harder. I struggled to identify which options best matched my qualifications and how to navigate the different pathways to Germany.

While researching online, I discovered the GMAC in Baghdad. There, I made an appointment for a counselling session. During the session, I learned which professions are in demand, how to find the right path to Germany reliable information.

My counsellor also referred me to the Career Compass Programme offered by the Imagine Foundation. The civil society organization supports young people like me in preparing for life, study or work in Europe. They helped me understand what employers in Germany expect from applicants, how to prepare for job interviews, and how to write a strong CV. It gave me more confidence for the next step.

Turning plans into action

Together, my counsellor and I identified the pathway that best matched my qualifications. With the centre's support, I prepared my application for Germany's Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte). The card allows qualified professionals to travel to Germany to search for a job while working part-time.

"Having a counsellor guide me step by step, answer my questions, and help me avoid mistakes gave me the confidence to keep moving forward."
Steven

My application for the Opportunity Card has been approved, and I am now preparing to move to Germany. While the recruitment process once felt overwhelming, I know now which documents I need, where to apply, and what to expect.
