“Building my future in my country”: a programme about migration and the opportunities in Senegal

Radio is an excellent medium for reaching as many people in Senegal as possible. That’s why a radio programme is now reporting about the risks of irregular migration and the local job prospects. It’s providing tips for job seekers and on starting a business. The programme „Sama ellëg fi ma dëkk“ (Building my future in my country) lasts for an hour. It’s being broadcast on community radio stations across the country. The programme was produced in French and in the local languages Wolof, Fulani and Diola. People here can also listen to a podcast of the programme in the local languages.

Ousmane uses the radio programme to talk about his experiences during his return to Senegal.

A returnee talks about his experiences

At the start of the programme, a returnee talks about his experiences. His name is Ousmane. He's a tailor in Dakar. The Senegalese-German Centre for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration (CSAEM) gave him support. Ousmane talks about the help he was given. But he also talks about the hurdles he had to overcome.

Information on psychosocial counselling

A representative from the House of Hope organisation also speaks during the radio programme. Among other things, this organisation offers therapies for traumatised returnees. It supports people by offering psychosocial counselling.

Alternatives to irregular migration

An expert on the triggers and risks of irregular migration and the coordinator of the Senegalese-German Centre reports on the opportunities for creating better job prospects for local people. And there is a presentation of what the CSAEM can offer. The centre provides counselling sessions and a wide variety of courses for job seekers, as well as support with starting your own business.

Discussions about the radio programme

The programme will be broadcast over several months in the 14 regions of Senegal. This West African country has around 240 community radio stations. These local, non-commercial broadcasters reach people in all parts of the country. “The radio programme enables us to speak to people who can’t read or access social media”, said Tanja Schreiner. She’s a CSAEM communication expert. The Senegalese-German Centre is also organising discussions about the programme, and is therefore actively involving the listeners.

This radio programme was produced by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
